Tesla Unveils its New Roadster the World's Fastest Car
Tesla surprised attendees last night at the company's truck event by unveiling a brand new Roadster. The base model of the Roadster will do 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, the company says.
"The new Tesla Roadster will be the fastest production car ever made, period," CEO Elon Musk said. "It will be the first time any car has broken two seconds at 0-60," Musk said. "It will be the fastest to 100 mph: 4.2 seconds."
The first generation Roadster was Tesla's first electric vehicle. The sports car was produced by in limited numbers in California from 2008 to 2012. The Roadster was the first highway legal serial production all-electric car to use lithium-ion battery cells and the first production all-electric car to travel more than 200 miles on a single charge.
Tesla also said that its new Roadster will be available in 2020. The four-seater can hit speeds up to 250 mph. Tesla said. "It will be the first time that any production car has broken nine seconds in the quarter mile," Tesla CEO Elon Musk told CNBC.
The "all-electric supercar" also has a 200-kilowatt battery pack that offers 620 miles of highway driving. Suggested retail price is $200,000, Tesla said. Musk described the Roadster as a "smackdown" to the fossil fuel-addicted auto industry.
Volkswagen to Spend $82.5 Billion in the Next 5 Years on Electric Vehicles
WOLFSBURG, Germany — Volkswagen's leaders on Friday approved a five-year spending plan that aims to further the German automaker's goal of transforming itself into a leading global force in electric cars.
Europe's largest carmaker by unit sales will spend more than 34 billion euros ($40 billion) on electric cars, autonomous driving and new mobility services by the end of 2022, it said on Friday following a supervisory board meeting.
Total group investments by 2022 will total about 72 billion euros — or nearly $85 billion, the group said, confirming an earlier Reuters story. VW announced Thursday it plans to spend $11.8 billion on EVs in China.
"With the planning round now approved, we are laying the foundation for making Volkswagen the world's number one player in electric mobility by 2025," Chief Executive Matthias Mueller said in a statement.
Until it admitted two years ago to cheating on U.S. diesel emissions tests, a scandal that has cost $30 billion so far, Volkswagen had been slow to embrace electric cars and self-driving technology.
However, the emissions scandal plus new Chinese quotas for electric cars have prompted a strategic shift to zero-emission and self-driving technology with VW now pledging to offer an electric version of each of its 300 group models by 2030.
Michelin's Vision Concept Tire Selected as One of TIME Magazine's '25 Best Inventions of 2017'
GREENVILLE, S.C., — TIME Magazine has selected Michelin's revolutionary Vision concept tire of the future among its influential "25 Best Inventions of 2017," which the opinion-leading U.S. news journal published online today.
"On behalf of Michelin and the many designers and engineers involved in bringing the Vision concept to life, we are honored to receive this recognition from the editors at TIME Magazine," said Terry Gettys, global head of research and development for Michelin Group, based in Clermont-Ferrand, France.
"We believe the Vision concept is as beautiful as the natural world that inspires it, combining multiple technologies that together project the course for Michelin's innovation in the years ahead," Gettys said. "The ideas presented in the Vision concept have taken hold among vehicle designers, demonstrating a feasible vision of how the tire can provide essential contributions to sustainable mobility in the future."
The Vision is both a wheel and airless tire in one. That means there is no need for inflation or rims; the entire mechanical structure is sturdy enough to support the vehicle but still flexible enough to absorb impact and pressure. Vision attaches to the vehicle via a hub connection.
Without air, the tire is no longer susceptible hazards such as low pressure or blowouts.
The Vision concept tire was introduced earlier this year at Michelin's Movin'On summit for sustainable mobility in Montréal, represents an innovative combination of four technologies, airless, organic, rechargeable and connected.
The Vision concept is an airless tire-and-wheel assembly, dramatically advancing the Michelin X TWEEL Airless Radial, which was also selected as one of Time's "Best Inventions" in 2005 and is now commercially available for specific industrial and low-speed applications.
One of the most advanced features is that the tire is rechargeable. The Vision concept tire can be "recharged" on demand with a 3D-printed tread, designed to be customized with biodegradable materials according to the driver's mobility needs — summer, all-season, winter, on-road, off-road — using service stations equipped with 3D-printing kiosks. Unlike tires today, the rechargeable tire could conceivably last for the life of the vehicle.
The tire structure can be embedded with sensors capable of detecting road conditions, maintenance requirements, adherence, and other necessary performances that are communicated to the vehicle, or to infrastructure networks on the smart roadways of the future.
Parsons & Renovo Announce Collaboration to Enable Deployment of Commercial Automated Mobility on Demand Systems
LOS ANGELES — Renovo, a mobility software technology company, and Parsons, a technology-driven engineering services firm, today announced—at LA CoMotion's Cities in Motion Leadership Conference—a collaboration to enable the deployment and scaling of commercial automated mobility on demand (AMoD) systems.
These systems are designed to manage an entire transportation ecosystem made possible by ride hailing, highly automated vehicles, next-generation intelligent transportation systems, and other technologies that are now commercially available.
The AMoD system envisioned by Renovo and Parsons will be the first to anticipate and capitalize on the combined impacts these and other emerging technologies will have on the urban infrastructure of the 21st Century.
The Parsons–Renovo collaboration will center on two best-in-class transportation platforms already deployed separately by the two companies.
