On May 19, 2017, Tesla announced that current owners can refer up to five people to buy a new Tesla. Those referred will get free unlimited Supercharging and a $1,000 credit toward a new Model S or Model X by using a personal referral code. Existing owners who purchase a new Model S or X will get free Supercharger access ─ no referral required.
Reversal of Policy
This is reversal of policy for Tesla, as the company recently announced the vehicles purchased after January 15, 2017 will no longer come with free supercharging.
Prior to January 15, all drivers that purchased a Tesla received free Supercharger access for as long as they owned their vehicles. After January 15th, 2017, anyone who ordered a Tesla received just 400 kWh of free Supercharging credits per year, good for about 1,000 miles of driving. This incentive by Elon Musk is encouraging people to buy a new Tesla.
Gifts for Referrals
As a thank you to customers that refer family and friends to purchase a Tesla, current Tesla owners will be eligible to receive some cool Referral Program awards, including early access for a solor roof, based on the amount of referrals that end up buying a Tesla. The company wanted to thank people for helping to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy.
