Auto Workers Strike Against GM, Ford, and Stellantis
【Summary】The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has gone on strike against GM, Ford, and Stellantis. Ford faces a growing chance of a strike in Canada, as negotiations continue but chances of reaching a deal are slim. The union has granted an extension to GM and Stellantis to try and reach a pattern-setting deal. The Canadian strike could impact Ford's US plants. Ford has not yet responded to the union's statement.
Ford may be facing another union strike on Monday night, as reported by Unifor, the union representing workers at its Canadian facilities. With the union's contract set to expire at 11:59 pm, talks with the company are ongoing but the chances of reaching a new deal to avoid a strike are diminishing.
Unifor's president, Lana Payne, stated that "the likelihood of a strike increases with each passing hour." While the union granted an extension to General Motors and Stellantis, its contracts with these companies were also due to expire on Monday night as it aimed to establish a pattern-setting deal with Ford.
The issues at hand in Canada mirror those in the US negotiations between the "Big Three" automakers and the United Auto Workers Union. The union initiated its first-ever simultaneous strike against all three companies on Friday, targeting one assembly plant at each. This Canadian strike could potentially impact Ford's operations at certain US plants.
Unifor represents two engine plants in Windsor, Ontario, situated just across the river from Detroit. These plants produce V-8 engines for the popular F-150 pickup truck and the Mustang sports car. Additionally, the union represents an assembly plant that manufactures the Ford Edge and Lincoln Nautilus SUVs. Therefore, a strike in Canada could have a more significant impact on Ford compared to the lone UAW strike in Wayne, Michigan.
As of now, Ford has not provided a response to Unifor's statement.
