Innoson Motors' Bold Move: Producing Electric Vehicles in Nigeria

Nigeria's indigenous vehicle manufacturing company, Innoson, is planning to venture into the production of electric vehicles. The company aims to utilize locally available components and raw materials in its manufacturing process. Innoson Motors has recently started producing compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles and is expected to commence commissioning soon.
Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) has announced its intention to establish an electric vehicle factory in Nigeria. The company's Head of Corporate Communications, Cornel Osigwe, revealed this during an interview on AriseTV. Osigwe stated that the Chairman of Innoson, Innocent Ifediaso Chukwuma, is determined to manufacture electric vehicles due to the availability of all major components required for production within Nigeria.
Osigwe further explained that the strategic approach of Innoson Motors is to capitalize on the abundance of raw materials in Nigeria, thereby eliminating the need to import expensive components such as batteries. The company has already commenced production of CNG vehicles and now aims to set up an EV manufacturing plant in Nigeria to produce electric vehicles.
Previously, Innoson Motors garnered attention on social media when they creatively used a custom number plate to market one of their cars, joining the trend that pokes fun at traditional fuel-powered engines. Additionally, the company recently launched its latest innovation, the Innoson LNG/CNG Gas Trucks, buses, and cars, which utilize liquified natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) as fuel sources.
The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) president, Otunba Francis Meshioye, inaugurated the launch of these vehicles at the Innoson factory in Nnewi, Anambra State. With their foray into electric vehicle production, Innoson Motors aims to contribute to the development of the automotive industry in Nigeria by utilizing local resources and materials.
