Kia showcased two electric vehicle (EV) concepts, the EV3 compact crossover and the EV4 midsize sedan, at the Los Angeles Auto Show. These concepts are expected to be available in showrooms by early 2025, expanding Kia's lineup of battery-electric vehicles. The EV3 and EV4 were originally unveiled at Kia's EV Day in Korea on October 12. The EV5 SUV concept, which initially featured suicide doors and no B-pillar but was later modified with regular doors, was also presented earlier this year, although it remains uncertain if it will be released in the US.
In addition to the EV3 and EV4, Kia currently offers the Niro EV and the EV6 in the US market. However, the company has plans to introduce more electric cars and crossovers. For instance, Kia is already accepting orders for the EV9 premium electric SUV, a three-row, seven-passenger vehicle with a price range of $54,900 to $73,900. The EV9 has a range of 280 to 304 miles, depending on the model, and design elements from the EV9 can be seen in the EV3 and EV4.
While the EV3 and EV4 are expected to be available in the US, it remains uncertain if the EV5 will be released in the country. If it does, it would fill the gap between the Niro EV and EV6. Kia plans to assemble the larger EV9 in West Point, Georgia, to qualify for a government tax rebate for buyers, which can save consumers up to $7500. This incentive could motivate Kia to produce the EV3, EV4, or EV5 in the US as well.
In addition to the EV3 and EV4, there have been rumors of Kia offering a B-segment EV and a GT1 electric sports car. These speculations add context to the recent reveal of the EV3 and EV4 concepts at the Los Angeles Auto Show. While details about powertrains and battery size are yet to be announced, Kia describes the EV3 as an electric compact crossover that combines the technology, practicality, and design of their flagship EV9 SUV. The EV4, on the other hand, is described as an innovative four-door EV sedan with impactful lines and a sleek interior layout.
Kia's design philosophy for these concepts, known as "Opposites United," draws inspiration from nature and humanity's contrasts. The exterior of the EV3 features a unique silhouette with a sloping roofline and a disconnected C-pillar, creating a floating effect. The interior of both concepts combines practicality with a transformative ambience and design. Kia also highlights the use of bioplastic and Bio Polyurethane, derived from biomass sources, as eco-friendly alternatives for the interiors.
While production versions of the EV3 and EV4 are anticipated to be available as early as 2025, it is still uncertain when or if these concepts will reach production. Kia invites readers to share their thoughts on these entry-level affordable EV concepts.
