Baidu Selects ON Semiconductor for its Apollo Autonomous Driving Platform

LAS VEGAS — ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ON), a leading semiconductor supplier, has joined Baidu's global, open Apollo Autonomous Driving Platform. Through this collaboration, Baidu's Apollo partners can get the plug-and-play compatible imaging solutions jointly developed by both companies.
ON Semiconductor develops semiconductor solutions for various industries, including automotive applications for active safety and semi-autonomous vehicles, which includes advanced front lighting systems, park assist solutions, cameras, lane departure warning, advanced braking, and collision avoidance systems.
Baidu's Apollo Platform provides an open source, reliable software and hardware system, enabling the efficient development of autonomous driving systems by automotive systems designers. Image sensing is a key component of the Apollo platform which supports enhanced autonomous driving functionality.
ON Semiconductor's 3μm-based advanced CMOS image sensor product provides a foundation for customers to quickly begin development of advanced vision systems for autonomous driving, with the flexibility to upgrade to future sensors at volume deployment. With high dynamic range (HDR), the sensors are able to provide clear single images and video in the challenging low and mixed light scenes synonymous with automotive driving environments.
In addition to a simplified and accelerated implementation of automotive camera applications, the relationship gives Apollo ecosystem members priority access to ON Semiconductor's technical support and product information. As another benefit, all of Apollo's partners will get early opportunities to work with future generation image sensing technologies from ON Semiconductor. So far, over 70 partners have joined Baidu's Apollo Platform, including Ford Motor Co, Daimler, NVIDIA, and Microsoft.
"Given the importance of cameras as sensors for autonomous driving, we considered many aspects in our selection process for the Apollo platform including product roadmap, experience in automotive, and technical support for ecosystem platforms," said Mr. Zhenyu Li, VP and General Manager of Intelligent Driving Group at Baidu. "ON Semiconductor was the right choice for Apollo platform image sensor needs."

Baidu's open Apollo Platform was first announced in April of 2017. Baidu now claims one of the largest partner ecosystems for an autonomous driving platform in the world. Baidu's COO Qi Lu called the platform the "Android of the autonomous driving industry, but more open and powerful." Apollo aims to provide developers with tools including training data, APIs, source code and reference hardware to help its partners bring autonomous driving products to market much faster.
