Trump's 2019 Budget Threatens EV Development
【Summary】The 2019 Budget proposed by the Trump Administration jeopardizes EV development programs at the DOE and EPA.
Over the years, Trump has owned a line-up of cars that aren't exactly eco-friendly. The list includes Ferraris, Lamborghinis and other gas guzzlers. So, it comes as no surprise the president doesn't have a problem attacking renewable energy and electric vehicles. For the 2019 fiscal year, the administration hopes to obliterate several programs that drive EV development.
The 2019 budget weakens the DOE and ARPA-E
To start, the budget proposed by the Trump administration eliminates the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) direct loan program. The ATVM, created by the Department of Energy (DOE), has helped create millions of fuel efficient vehicles. Ford, Tesla and Nissan have generated thousands of jobs in the EV industry using the program.
Trump's white house also plans to cut the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Vehicle Technologies Office at the DOE by 78%. And the budget aims to get rid of the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E). This program has provided millions of dollars for EV development.
Trump administrations aims to cripple the EPA
The environmental protection agency (EPA) has been in trouble since Trump appointed Scott Pruitt its head. Now, the Trump administration plans to cut several Clean Air Act-related programs at the EPA. This will limit the EPA's ability to monitor emissions, by reducing the Office of Transportation and Air Quality's budget by 27 percent. The budget will also eliminate other EPA programs such as SmartWay, the State and Local Climate Energy Program. Plus, it will cut the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act program, which has been shown to greatly reduce emissions.
Trump argues his proposed budget will increase jobs in Detroit. In reality, it will do the opposite. The US auto industry has seen massive growth in the last decade or so, as it's begun to trade 15-mpg SUVs in for fuel efficient vehicles.

These proposed budget cuts won't become law without the support of congress. Let your local officials know how you feel about the issue. Write them, email them – whatever. Do what you need to do, to let the administration know you care about EV development.
