LOS ANGELES — EVgo, largest EV charging network in the U.S., continues its expansion to support the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. The company announced today the completion of a two month project to upgrade 21 of its popular fast-charging stations in three key California markets—San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. The upgrades will allow the charging of more makes of vehicles.

The updates include replacing single-plug standard chargers with dual-standard chargers that include both CHAdeMO and CCS (Combined Charging System) Combo connectors to make quick charging more convenient for drivers. The 21 EV charging stations will now have the capabilities to charge EVs using either CHAdeMO or CCS Combo connectors.

CHAdeMO and CCS Combo are the two main non-proprietary charging configurations for electric vehicles. CHAdeMO is a DC charging standard for electric vehicles, while the CCS is a quick charging standard for battery electric vehicles delivering high-voltage direct current via a special electrical connector.

CCS Combo connectors are used by Jaguar, Volkswagen, General Motors, BMW, Daimler, Ford, FCA, Tesla and Hyundai. The CHAdeMO connectors are commonly used by the Nissan LEAF, Kia Soul EV, and Tesla vehicles (using an adapter).

"EVgo is making the electric vehicle charging experience as easy as possible for all drivers, and today's news that we have added additional capacity at 21 California stations means that EVgo's network can power even more EVs," said Cathy Zoi, CEO of EVgo. "The old world is changing, and EVgo is rapidly expanding our network of over 1000 public fast chargers across the US so that more Americans can choose a better way to drive."

EVgo upgraded chargers will be welcome in the state. According to The International Council on Clean Transportation, California leads the country in electric vehicle sales and in 2017 accounted for half of all EV purchases in the nation. Providing more fast-charging capabilities throughout California is key to support all of the electric vehicles currently on the road.

EVgo's fast chargers deliver charging rates that are approximately eight times faster than a conventional Level 2 charger and are compatible with all EV models currently on the market that accept DC Fast Charging.

EVgo's network includes 1,000 chargers in 66 metropolitan markets. Each month, EVgo provides over 100,000 charges to over 65,000 EV drivers. EVgo saw a record year in 2017, with its network of chargers providing the equivalent 40 million miles of emissions-free electric driving.

EVgo's chargers are installed in convenient, high-traffic locations where demand for EV fast charging is highest.
