Mercedes-Benz Officially Reveals Tesla Model X Rival EQC 400

The competition in the luxury electric vehicle segment escalated earlier last week when German automaker Mercedes-Benz officially unveiled the all-new electric EQC 400 SUV in its production-spec avatar. The all-electric utility vehicle will rival the likes of Tesla's Model X.
The Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 will be the first electric vehicle which will be launched under the company's all-new EQ sub-brand. EQC 400 is expected to go on sale in North America sometime in the year 2020.
The car is powered by 80 kWh battery pack which powers two electric motors located on each axle. The electric powertrain manages to produce a combined power output of 402 hp and 564 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes-Benz claims that EQC 400 will be capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in under 4.2 seconds with an all-electric driving range of 279 miles.
A competitive comparison reveals that EQC 400's European rivals feature more powerful battery packs. Jaguar I-Pace gets a 90 kWh battery pack and the upcoming Audi e-Tron will be offered with a 95 kWh battery. Just like its American competitor and future German rivals, EQC will also be offered with different driving modes which includes an Eco, Sport, or a Max-range mode to conserve battery power.
The front electric motor has been programmed to offer range economic cruising, whereas the rear motor is designed to offer maximum performance. A smart coasting function, which Mercedes calls ‘Eco assist', will look out for areas where the SUV can coast to preserve energy. The Eco assist will gather speed limit data and use mapping technology that includes elevation and sign recognition to detect the areas where the vehiclc can coast to save battery power.
The powertrain in EQC 400 will be governed by software, which will constantly shift power between the two motors depending upon road conditions and driving requirements. EQC 400 will get a haptic accelerator pedal which will assist the driver in conserving power with regenerative braking. In addition, paddles located behind the steering wheel allows the driver to select the vehicle's regeneration level.
As opposed to the minimalistic cabin design approach adopted by Tesla, the Mercedes-Benz EQC's cabin looks familiar to a conventional cockpit we see on most vehicles. The UI of the interior is futuristic, but also like the one we would find in luxury SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLC.
Inside the cabin, there is a wide instrument cluster, mood lighting and an infotainment screen which is in the middle of the dashboard. There's also substantial use of black piano finishes on the center tunnel and the steering wheel gets traditional steering mounted controls. The door panels feature classic Mercedes toggles which adjust the electric seats and speakers are integrated into the A-pillars of the SUV.
