Volvo's Polestar Reveals New Details on its 'Disruptive Electric Vehicles'
【Summary】Here's a quick look at Polestar's plan to take the electric vehicle world by storm.
Volvo's upcoming electric vehicle brand Polestar is fast becoming the auto industry's center of attention. With several automakers bringing in advancements and new technologies for long-distance electric vehicle commuting, Polestar is also tossing its hat in the ring.
The brand's first offering will be a Halo product dubbed Polestar 1. This car will be an ultra-luxurious, high-performance plug-in hybrid, which will offer 90 miles of electric driving range.
After the car runs out of juice there is also a 2-liter supercharged and turbo-charged engine onboard which will take on the duties of producing more power. Together the twin 163 kW motors and the supercharged and turbo-charged engine and a 35 kW integrated starter generator will produce more than 600 horsepower.
The company claims that the specifications of Polestar 1 will put it in the "supercar" territory. The introduction of Polestar 1 will be followed up with the Polestar 2. The Polestar 2 with its more affordable price tag is designed for the masses.
The Polestar 2
The Polestar 1 with its price tag of $155,000 will be a niche offering, However, the Polestar 2 will feature a price tag that will fall between the $40,000 and $65,000 mark, about the price range of the Tesla Model 3.
Polestar 2 will get a 300-mile all-electric driving range and will be offered in a five-seater layout. The 2 has been designed to be a 4-door fastback, which will rival the likes of the BMW 3-Series, Tesla Model 3 and the Audi A4. The production of Polestar 1 will start in 2019 and will you get an annual production of 500 units. The first batch of Polestar 1 has already been booked and lucky consumers might get the chance to book one in phase two of its production.
The Polestar 1
The company has also confirmed that they will continue producing the Polestar 1 for an additional two years. To cater to the mass-market, the Polestar 2 will be produced in large numbers of around 50,000 units annually. The 2 will be the company's first ever battery-only electric model and more details about the car will be revealed in late Q1 2019.
Polestar will first introduce its product in cities like Los Angeles San Francisco San Diego and Seattle. The cars will be sold out of what the company has dubbed as "Polestar spaces". Even though Volvo dealerships happen to be the backbone of this operation, it's very likely that customers would not have any interactions with Volvo dealerships.
Retail operations of Polestar products will be based entirely online, where customers can schedule test drives and place the orders. For servicing and maintenance, a Polestar owner can drop off his/ her car into a Volvo dealership where a Polestar technician will service the car.
