PAVE Coalition Campaigns for AV Awareness and Public Safety

How do autonomous cars make real-time decisions on the road? Can self-driving units be used in locations that frequently experience rainy or icy weather? What new regulations govern these types of modern vehicles?
These questions are currently on the minds of curious consumers, the general public and policymakers, as driverless technology continues to spread worldwide. To ensure accurate information is available about self-driving cars, the Partners for Automated Vehicle Education (PAVE) is launching several educational programs. Additionally, a handful of auto manufacturers and organizations have joined forces to support the PAVE coalition (more on this later).
Educating Consumers about Driverless Tech
For regulators, the non-profit group will launch workshops across the country. PAVE will also provide educational booklets to improve retail sales efforts and customer service. When it comes to educating consumers, the organization plans to host live trials that showcase driverless vehicles. The events will allow individuals to directly experience and use autonomous cars, which is an effective way to learn about the technology.
"We believe that our roads can be safer, that we can open new roads for Americans who are unable to drive because of disability or other factors, and that we can enhance mobility while also reducing the environmental and other impacts of vehicle travel to make our transportation system more sustainable," said the non-profit organization on its website.
At this time, the participants will focus on bringing relevant insights about autonomous vehicles to mainstream consumers. As most organizations and businesses in the coalition are active in the auto industry, the educational programs are expected to be informative and fresh. PAVE will also take a comprehensive approach to education, covering various aspects of self-driving cars.
So far, all members of the group agree that driverless platforms are widely misunderstood; and in order to move forward, such concerns should be addressed as self-driving features become more complex. By improving communication between private auto companies and consumers, the organization's efforts may lead to increased adoption rates, trust and comfort in using the technology on a daily basis.
Partners and Notable Participants
The educational objectives of the PAVE coalition have attracted a unique range of businesses in the automotive sector and safety regulators. Notable automakers participating in the group include: Intel, Mobileye, Daimler, Toyota, Volkswagen and Audi (US division).
Safety organizations and associations that are members of PAVE: AAA, American Public Transportation Association, the US Chamber of Commerce, SAE International and Consumer Technology Association. Businesses may request to join PAVE by filling out a form on its official website.
"If we are going to save the lives that automated vehicles can save, the public and their elected representatives must be full participants in shaping the future of our roadways," said Deborah AP Hersman, President and CEO of the PAVE council.
It's important to highlight that there are other groups with similar missions in promoting autonomous vehicle safety and awareness, such as the Automated Vehicle Coalition and the Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets. Ford, Waymo, Lyft and Uber are active members of the organizations.
