Porsche Macan Slated to Go All-Electric for Its Second Generation
【Summary】Porsche’s best-selling model, the Macan, will become an all-electric model “early in the next decade.”

The upcoming Porsche Taycan may be getting a lot of attention, but the high-performance German automaker is doing more than just focusing on a sporty, electric sedan to take on the Model S. Porsche's best-selling vehicle, the Macan SUV will go all electric, for its second generation. The decision to come out with an electric variant of the SUV fits in with the automaker's goal of having electric vehicles make up 25 percent of its total sales by 2025.
A Trio of EVs
When the electric Macan hits the market, the SUV will be Porsche's third all-electric offering in the brand's lineup. The other two include the Taycan sedan and the Cross Turismo, which is the crossover version of the Taycan. As far as a timeline, the Taycan is expected to come out at the end of this year, while the Cross Turismo will go into production next year. The Macan EV should follow some time after.
With electric vehicles being expensive to manufacture, it shouldn't come as a surprise to hear that the Macan electric will have the same 800-volt charging system that will be found in Porsche's other electric cars. Based on that information alone, we're expecting the vehicle to have the same charging capabilities. With that comes a similar powertrain and performance. So expect more than 250 miles of range and approximately 600 horsepower.
Why Electrify the Macan?
The electric Macan will be built at Porsche's Leipzig factory, which is where the current SUV is manufactured. The decision to continue using the factory to build the electric SUV is a good one, as it means Porsche won't have to spend tons of money building an all-new factory.
"Our aim is to take a pioneering role in technology, and for this reason we will continue to consistently align the company with the mobility of the future," said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche.
Last year, Porsche sold roughly 23,500 Macan SUVs, accounting for almost half of the brand's entire sales figure of 57,202. The Cayenne SUV came in second with a total of 10,733 units sold, while the Panamera came in third with 8,042 units. Reducing its best offering to just an EV could prove to be a bad decision for Porsche, but only time will tell on that front. And electrification is one of the automaker's major goals for the future.
"By 2022 we will be investing more than six billion euros in electric mobility, and by 2025 50 percent of all new Porsche vehicles could have an electric drive system," said Blume.
While the Taycan and the Cross Turismo will be important electric cars for Porsche, the Macan EV will be even more significant. Porsche didn't come out with an official date for the electric Macan besides saying "early in the next decade."
