BMW Installs 100 EV Charging Stations at U.S. National Parks
【Summary】Automaker BMW donated 100 electric vehicle charging stations in and near some of the country’s most popular national parks. BMW announced yesterday that more than 90 of the charging stations have been completed with the remainder set to open later this month.
Each summer, millions of people flock to U.S. national parks to escape from everyday life and experience nature. Trouble is that many national parks are located in remote areas where electric vehicle charging stations are few and far between, so drivers of electric vehicles planning on visiting one of these national parks must plan their road trips carefully.
Automaker BMW is to addressing this need and helping to elimate "range anxiety" for EV drivers. In partnership with the National Park Foundation, National Park Service, and the U.S. Department of Energy, The automaker donated 100 electric vehicle charging stations in and near some of the country's most popular national parks. BMW announced that more than 90 of the charging stations have been completed with the remainder set to open later this month.
The project was first announced in April 2017. The newly installed EV chargers enable travel by electric vehicles to national parks across the country.
"We can't think of a better way to enjoy the summer than visiting one of America's beautiful national parks. In making electric vehicle charging more widely available for everyone, this joint effort serves to make America's national parks more accessible to drivers of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles," said Bernhard Kuhnt, president and CEO, BMW of North America.
The EV chargers are open to drivers of all electric vehicles.
The locations of the EV chargers were carefully chosen. The team considered numerous factors, including the proximity and strength of EV markets, distance from nearby charging locations, and natural and cultural landscape considerations.
"The automobile has long been central to the great American vacation in national parks," said National Park Service Deputy Director P. Daniel Smith. "While our treasured landscapes offer familiar vistas time after time, the automobile has changed greatly, and parks want to meet the needs of our visitors who electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. This partnership with BMW, the Department of Energy and the National Park Foundation offers electric car drivers a place to charge the car while recharging themselves with nature and parks."
The Department of Energy's Vehicle Technologies Office supports innovative energy saving transportation projects at national park sites and is working to educate visitors on the benefits of driving electric vehicles while can helping the National Park Service meet their environmental goals.
