BMW Receives Over 45,000 Pre-Orders for the Upcoming Mini Electric

As part of of the annual Monterey Car Week in Pebble Beach this week, BMW is showcasing its new electric Mini foir the first time in the U.S. The Mini Electric is the first fully-electric version of the sporty small car.
With compact dimensions, stylish aesthetics, and impressive handling characteristics, the electric version of the iconic Mini Cooper was destined to be reincarnated as a electric car. It looks like the Mini Electric might become a big hit.
Customers across the world eagerly awaited for BMW to announce the Mini Electric. So much so, that only a month ago, German media reported that Mini received over 45,000 expressions of interest and the allure does not seem to be dying down anytime soon.
Elena Eser, Project leader for Mini E, was cited as the source behind these estimates.
This might mean that a large number of customers for Mini Electric will be left disappointed, as it is being estimated that the production run within the first several months will be quite a bit less than 45,000 units.
To put things in perspective, BMW (which is Mini's parent company) only sold 36,829 units of its i3 electric hatchback in 2018, which happens to be the i3's best-selling year since its introduction in 2013.
However BMW's keen on fast-tracking its electrification plan and looking at Mini Electric's specifications, the car seems to be a promising contender in the segment, which means there is a slight possibility that the BMW may try and match the market demand.
The Mini Electric also known as the Mini Cooper SE, will be powered by 32.6 kWh (gross) and 28.9 kWh (net) battery pack comprised of individual 12 modules. The electric car is expected to offer a WLTP range of between 124 to 144 miles and will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 7.3 seconds.
The motor in Mini Electric is rated at 184 horsepower with 200 lb-ft of torque. Top speed of the EV will be limited to around 93 mph.
The 2020 Mini SE will also come with fast charging capabilities and using a DC charging network. The battery pack can be recharged up to 80% in under 35 minutes.
Charging the battery pack to the same 80% level will take up to 2.5 hours when using the three-phase on-board charger system. However, recharging the Mini Electric to 100% using the same three-phase on-board charger will take an additional hour (3.5 hours total).
Initial pricing for the Mini Cooper SE in Germany starts at €32,500 ($35,502) and the front-wheel-drive car is expected to enter production on November 1.
