The First Fully-Electric Cadillac Sedan Expected to Debut in 2022

Nearly one hundred electrified vehicle models from multiple automakers are supposed to hit the North American market by 2022 and one of them will be a standalone electric car from GM's luxury subsidiary Cadillac.

Several Cadillac executives made announcements this year about the brand's intention of becoming a segment leader in the premium electric car space over the next few years, positioning Cadillac to become a serious competitor to Tesla.

It was also disclosed that a 400-mile electric Cadillac Escalade SUV is currently under development and will be a part of the fifth-generation Escalade lineup.

However, recent rumors suggest that Cadillac is working on a dedicated electric car which is expected to debut in 2022. This all-electric luxury offering is Cadillac's first-ever contender in the battery-powered vehicle segment.

GM's luxury division plans to introduce other electric models that will join the lineup of some of Cadillac's most famous nameplates, which currently includes three sedans and four sport utility vehicles. Cadillac's latest product strategy involves introducing a new model every six months until 2021.

In January, Cadillac teased a rendering of an unnamed electric crossover utility vehicle during the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The teaser was part of a presentation for the new Cadillac XT6 SUV. However, the company did not showcase the concept of the dedicated e-crossover in Detroit.

Cadillac's new electric crossover will rival the Tesla Model X and Audi e-tron in the midsize electric crossover segment.

Cadillac's upcoming electric models will be based on the company's next-generation EV platform which will be introduced sometime in 2021.

The all-new EV platform dubbed BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle 3 for the third-generation) will be a flexible and highly scalable architecture for front, rear and all-wheel-drive electric models. The all-new platform will also be compatible with both left and right-hand drive models for the global market.

The BEV platform is flexible enough to allow Cadillac to build vehicles of different sizes and body types, ranging from compact sedans to full-size sport utility vehicles.
