Ford Motor Company has confirmed its new Mustang-inspired crossover will be called the "Mustang Mach-E" and the fully-electric SUV will finally be revealed on Sunday at a special event in Los Angeles ahead of the LA Auto Show.
The Mach-E will be the first Ford vehicle other than the original Mustang, which debuted in 1964, to wear the iconic pony badge. Over the years, the Ford Mustang have grown to become one of the most iconic cars worldwide and is a big part of Ford's history, along with the F-150 pickup. Ford's new Mach-E has big shoes to fill in order to live up to the Mustang's heritage.
Ford will be streaming Sunday's event live on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Autohome (China). Special guest actor Idris Elba, best known for his role in the HBO series The Wire, will help introduce the latest addition to the Mustang family.
Customers will be able to reserve the Mustang Mach-E immediately following the broadcast on the automaker's website Ford.com. The event will end approximately 6:30 p.m. PST (9:30 p.m. EST) and customers can reserve one by putting down $500.
Ford said it will offer a limited "First Edition" to commemorate the launch, which the automaker will details on at the event on Sunday.
Customers who reserve a vehicle will be able to finalize their configuration sometime next year when the ordering window opens.
Reservations details for customers in China will be announced at a later date.
Rumors about the Mach-E have been swirling in the auto industry since early this year, when the news first leaked about Ford's plans to base its first fully-electric vehicle around the iconic Mustang.
So far, Ford has only released a teaser image, showing the silhouette for a crossover type vehicle, however The highly anticipated Mach-E was recently captured in spy shots sporting heavy camouflage.
According to industry insiders, the entry-level variant of Ford Mach E will offer an EPA estimated electric driving range of over 300 miles and a long-range version is expected to offer over 370 miles of range. The Mach E can go from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.5 seconds, about as quick as Tesla's performance models. However, none of these figures were confirmed by Ford. The official specs of the electric Mach-E will be revealed on Sunday.
In October, Ford announced a partnership with EV charging provider Electrify America, to ensure its upcoming crossover is supported by an efficient and reliable nationwide charging network. The Mach-E is expected to come with DC fast charging capabilities, which means it will be able to use the Electrify America's nationwide network of 150 kW DC fast chargers.
Ford will become the latest automaker introducing a fully electric model to compete with Tesla. Audi's first electric vehicle the e-tron SUV just hit dealer showrooms after being revealed in September 2019 in San Francisco.
Ford is working to electrify most of its model lineup. Ford expects that by 2022, more than 50% of Ford passenger vehicle sales will be electrified.
Ford has not announced any pricing yet for the Mach-E.
