General Motors Provides First Look at Its Upcoming Bolt EUV & Bolt EV

General Motors' onslaught of upcoming electric vehicles may be getting a lot of attention for the Cadillac Lyriq and GMC Hummer EV, but the automaker knows just how important affordable electric vehicles are. The Bolt EV was one of the first affordable electric cars with a usable amount of range on the market and while Tesla has the premium segment all but covered, GM is really looking to capitalize further downstream with its 2022 models.

Bold, SUV Styling

The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV and the new, larger Bolt EUV are on track to be released next summer and Chevrolet finally released a few teasers of the upcoming models. Unfortunately, the 5-second video clip only shows the upcoming Bolt EUV's silhouette. Still, it's the first official glimpse we've seen of the electric car.

From the short clip, we can see that the Bolt EUV will ditch the bulbous design from the current Bolt EV for a much more SUV-like look. If anything, it looks similar to the new Trailblazer and has similarly styled headlights and taillights. MotorTrend claims that the Bolt EUV will be roughly five to six inches longer than the Bolt, which could have something to do with the sharper, shapelier design.

The Bolt EUV will be the automaker's first foray into the "electric utility vehicle" segment. It, along with the updated Bolt EV, will ride on GM's BEV2 electric vehicle platform and be the first vehicle from Chevrolet to have General Motors' Super Cruise system. The latter is a hands-free semi-autonomous driving system for highway use that's only been offered in Cadillacs. Recently, we learned that Super Cruise is only available through a subscription plan. Eventually, Super Cruise will be available on vehicles from Buick and GMC, too.

Bolt EV Still Shrouded In Mystery

At the same time Chevrolet put out the short clip of the Bolt EUV, the automaker also put out a picture of the refreshed 2022 Bolt EV. From the side, the electric hatchback looks similar to the current model. The only differences we can spot are sharper LED headlights. The overall shape and design appear to be mostly carried over, but we'll have to wait and see if Chevy provides any better pictures later on.

Both the Bolt EV and the Bolt EUV are crucial vehicles to GM's electrification plans. By 2023, the American automaker wants to have 20 new EVs on the road. A lot of those vehicles will come out within the next few years. We expect both electric vehicles to come out close to the beginning of 2021
