AutoMobility LA 2016 is finally here! The event is set to feature a handful of cutting-edge startups that are advancing the nascent connected car sector. Out of all the auto-focused startups operating today, AutoMobility LA carefully selected ten highly disruptive companies for the event. Three startups from the list below will get an opportunity to engage in a mentor session with Bill Tai, successful Silicon Valley investor and entrepreneur. The top selection from the group will get a chance to visit Richard Branson's Necker Island for the Extreme Tech Challenge.
1. Argus Cyber Security
Product/Service: Embeddable auto cybersecurity
Argus Cyber Security is on a mission to protect private and commercial smart cars from unforeseen digital attacks. The startup is currently "the world's largest, independent automotive cyber security company working with the major OEMs, Tier 1s, aftermarket connectivity providers, fleet managers and dealerships to protect connected cars and commercial vehicles from hacking." Argus is based in Tel Aviv, Israel, with branches in Detroit, Silicon Valley and Tokyo.
Product/Service: Multi-vehicle EV charging system
EverCharge specializes in smart charging stations for EVs. The startup offers SAE J-1772 Connector and Tesla Connector-compatible facilities to almost any location in the US. EverCharge offers end-to-end solutions to EV charging, which includes service insurance, support, maintenance and automated billing. By leveraging common area power in mainstream buildings, the startup is able to lower costs and improve scalability.
3. HAAS Alert
Product/Service: V2V emergency communications
HAAS Alert is a California-based startup that offers vehicle-to-vehicle emergency communication services. The Heedful Audio Alert System is designed to improve emergency awareness on public roads, while reducing emergency vehicle accidents. Real-time alerts are pushed out via smartphone app to drivers. First responders, such as firetrucks and ambulances, are equipped with a device that communicates with nearby vehicles on the road.
Product/Service: Phone-to-car communication tech
LISNR provides communication services using ultrasonic inaudible technology (data-over-audio). Smart Tones (three-step protocol) can be deployed for proximity data transmission, security authentication or second-screen functionality. "Devices in audible range run the tone through a filter to remove background noise. Once a preamble is detected the LISNR SDK moves on to decode the data. Our audio frequency range is~ 18.7 – 19.2 kHz," said the company.
Product/Service: OS for autonomous vehicles
PolySync offers a cutting-edge middleware platform designed for safe and quick deployment of autonomous car applications. Using the startup's tools, businesses building autonomous platforms from scratch can gather information through a menu of plugins and logging systems. PolySync is an official hiring partner for Udacity's autonomous car degree program. The startup's clients include NVIDIA, DENSO, Honda and Caterpillar.
6. See Jane Go
Product/Service: Ridesharing app for women
See Jane Go is a ridesharing platform that exclusively caters to women. Through the official See Jane Go app, users can summon rides, get rates and view their profile history. The startup provides earning opportunities for local drivers, as well as ridesharing services to commuters.
Product/Service: App-based social culture guide
Spatial.ai provides innovative solutions to viewing data on digital maps. The startup focuses on adding social layers directly over maps, using "human-driven, machine-assisted analysis." Spatial.ai's customer base includes Ford, MapQuest and Mapbox.
Product/Service: Foam-based auto alternative
Spira4u manufactures and sells foam-based, three-wheel transportation vehicles. The startup's gas-powered model offers top speeds of 53 mph and a 2.5-gallon tank with a range of 200 miles. Its EV option runs on one or two 10KW, 72V motor(s) with top speeds of 75 mph. Over six inches of foam padding can be found on the vehicles.
Product/Service: Last-mile personal mobility
URB-E develops folding electric scooters for urban transportation. The startup's offerings support top speeds of 15 mph, 20-mile range and a compact, foldable design. Users can charge the scooter in four hours, which weighs roughly 35 lbs. URB-E sells over nine different electric scooter models to cater to a wide range of lifestyles and personal traveling preferences.
10. Your Mechanic
Product/Service: On-demand repair marketplace
Your Mechanic is a platform that allows customers to find certified auto repair and maintenance service mechanics. Using the app, individuals may request for a certified mechanic to go to their location, instead of going to a car shop. The startup caters to over 500 different auto services, including battery cable replacement, pre-purchase car inspection, transfer case fluid replacement and door latch replacement.
