Quick Comparison: Tesla Model Y Performance vs Ford's Mach-E GT Performance
【Summary】When Ford Motor Co introduced its Mustang Mach-E fully-electric crossover, it didn’t take long before industry experts and enthusiasts drew a comparison to Tesla’s Model Y, which is currently the best-selling electric crossover in the country. But Ford recently announced the flagship Mach-E GT Performance Edition that can hold its own against the Performance version of the Model Y.
When Ford Motor Co introduced its Mustang Mach-E fully-electric crossover, the EV received plenty of fanfare. It didn't take long before industry experts and enthusiasts drew a comparison between Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla's Model Y, which is currently the best-selling electric crossover in the country.
Back in January, we also drew a comparison between the two battery-powered crossovers and pointed out that it would be unfair to put the Performance version of Tesla Model Y against the standard Mustang Mach-E.
But Ford recently announced the flagship Mach-E GT Performance Edition and now that we have more information and specs about Ford's performance-oriented Mach-E, we can better compare it with the segment-leading Tesla Model Y.
Performance and Price
Both the Mach-E GT Performance Edition and Model Y Performance offer the same 0 to 60 MPH acceleration time of 3.5 seconds. The two crossovers also get a dual-motor layout which gives each electric SUV an all-wheel-drive setup.
The Mach-E GT Performance Edition retails for $64,900, which is $4,000 more expensive than the Tesla Model Y Performance. It's also worth noting that the Mach-E GT Performance Edition also qualifies for the $7,500 federal tax credit, which brings the crossover's overall cost down to $57,400. With Tesla having sold over 200,000 qualifying electric vehicles, buyers are no longer eligible for the $7,500 tax credit for the Model Y.
Unlike the more powerful Performance Edition, the standard Mach-E GT takes 3.8 seconds to hit the 60 mph mark from a standstill. It also qualifies for the federal tax credit, and with its ore affordable $59,900 MSRP, it's effectively $8,590 cheaper than the Model Y Performance, which costs $60,990.
The Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition comes equipped with a 98.8 kWh battery pack, which is larger than the 80 kWh unit that powers Model Y Performance. Even so, as per EPA estimates, Ford's flagship Mach-E model only delivers around 235 miles of range, which is 68 miles less than Tesla's Model Y Performance
The Mustang Mach GT also comes equipped with the same 98.8 kWh battery pack as its more powerful sibling. However, according to EPA, the Mach-E GT can deliver 250 miles of range.
It is also worth noting that EPA estimates are based on strict benchmarks, and other automakers like Porsche have discovered that their models prove to be more efficient in real-world conditions, or when subjected to more sympathetic testing formats like the WLTP standards.
