General Motors Teases the All-New 'Blazer SS' Electric SUV
The "Blazer SS" will be a high-performance, electric version of the Chevy Blazer SUV.

Automaker General Motors has been in the news a lot lately. Last week, the company had to issue a recall for its highly anticipated Hummer EV because of faulty tail light assemblies. Following the Hummer EV recall, GM announced its making an additional $3.4 billion investment to acquire an equity ownership stake in autonomous driving technology company Cruise.

Now, the automaker is joining the likes of Ford Motor Co in reviving former name plates like it did with the new Maverick pickup and Bronco SUV. More specifically, GM is reviving its lauded "SS" nameplate for the forthcoming fully-electric Blazer SUV.

For those unfamiliar with Chevy's SS badge, the "Super Sport" designation was first assigned to GM's iconic muscle cars in the 1960s.

GM announced the refreshed 2023 Blazer EV in February, and more recently released teasers of the high-performance all-electric Blazer SS.

The new electric vehicle will be the first performance-oriented SS model to join GM's fully-electric lineup. The Blazer SS will be launched in spring 2023 as a 2024 model. GM also confirmed that a standard version of the Blazer EV will make its world debut later this year.

We first learned about the forthcoming electric Blazer back in January, when General Motors CEO Mary Barra confirmed the plans to revive the SS nameplate for the electric truck during her keynote address for the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Both the Chevy Blazer SS EV and Equinox EV are just two of around 20 electric models that GM plans to launch by 2023 in the US. So far, we do not have any information regarding the performance specifications for the new electric Blazer SS.

However, we can confidently say that General Motors' new Ultium battery EV platform will underpin the new Blazer SS electric crossover. We also expect the forthcoming Equinox EV and electric Blazer SS to share a similar design language.

GM claims the RS trim of Equinox EV will deliver 300 miles of range. Since the electric Blazer SS will be a performance model, we expect it to offer similar range, but with much more power and a all-wheel-drive, dual-motor setup.

The new Blazer EV will be the second revival of the SS badge, and it's first-ever as an all-electric reboot.

In the early 2000s, Chevrolet introduced a new lineup of SS-badged models, including the Malibu Max SS and Trailblazer SS. At the moment, the Camaro sports car is the only GM model available as an SS variant.

The all-electric Blazer will probably ride on a set of unique, 12-spoke alloy wheels, which will also sport the SS badging. These new rims were visible in a recent teaser video that GM shared. In the same video, we also see the Blazer EVs charging port integrated into the front fender, which offers some more visual proof of GM's plans for the Blazer SS electric SUV.
